Appeal Now Exceeds £150,000

Thanks to new pledges from Schools and Rotary Clubs the appeal now exceeds £150,000 with 4 weeks to go. As we approach the Anniversary of the Tsunami it is hoped that the generous people of Yorkshire will help us reach our target.

 

This Must Be The Biggest Cheque Yet


Well done to Manor Infant School in Knaresborough for presenting the biggest cheque yet (in size if not amount). The £148.30 was raised at their Harvest Festival.
Em Lloyd-Davies, Rotary District International Chairman attended an assembly to explain what is happening with their money and it was pleasing that they all listened attentively - the decoration of the sea in their hall is very appropriate!

Craven Business Awards

Friday 25th November saw the first Craven Business Awards in Skipton arranged by the local newspaper the Craven Herald. From each seat sold the paper donated £5 to the Yorkshire School, there was also an auction of a Holiday donated by Cottages 4 U (part of the Welcome Holiday Group) which raised £475.00p - A romantic night at the Rendezvous Hotel (including dinner, bed and breakfast) donated by the hotel raised £155.00p - A laser printer donated by Skipton Stationery raised £175.00p.
The overall sum raised on the night and donated to the "Yorkshire School in Sri Lanka" amounts to £1,825.00p.
Thank you to the Craven Herald and Rendezvous Hotel for choosing The Yorkshire School as your charity this year.

The Proms in Kirk Hammerton


Having given tremendous support to the Rotary Young Musicians of the Year (reported earlier), Kirk Hammerton CE Primary school decided to hold an afternoon concert for an invited audience.The Recorder Group gave another excellent performance supported by enthusiatic musicians and ballet dancers. With only 60 pupils they can be justifiably proud of their talents- congratulations to the Upper Juniors who did most of the organisation - £50.14 raised for the Yorkshire School.

 

Wishing Well for the Appeal

HALFACRES Junior and Infants, Castleford, came up with a novel way to raise money for the School by using a Wishing Well to collect donations at their Harvest Festival. Your wishes for a new Scool in Sri Lanka are shared by numerous people in the Great County of Yorkshire and the donation of £275 will go a long way to help. Thanks also to PATHWAYS Special Needs School who raised £32.00 at their Harvest Festival.

Updated Appeal Total

Progress towards the goal of £200,000 continues. As at today's date the total raised or pledged has reached £142,000.

But there is only five weeks left until the appeal closes. If your school, company, club or organisation can help by making a donation, or by purchasing candles or calendars, then please do let us know.

Foundation Stone laid

The Foundation Stone of the Yorkshire School was laid on 5 November, as reported previously. We've now received some pictures of the ceremony, so everyone can see the start to this exciting project...












 

Hill House St Mary's, Doncaster, Promoting Good Citizenship

Hill House St. Mary’s is an independent day school governed by a charitable trust, who are keen to support worthwhile causes. Annually at least one each of local, national and international charities have been supported and in recent years over £5000 per annum has been raised.

Driffield Schools Join as Partners

Members of the Rotary Club of Driffield have been busy visiting schools in their area and it is pleasing to record that Nafferton School, Driffield will be donating monies raised from a collection at their school carol concert.
King's Mill School, Driffield which is a special school for disabled children, are looking for a long term relationship with the Yorkshire School and are therefore allocating funds raising efforts to help this school.

Rotary Tsunami Relief Raffle

The raffle raised £4,286.
Three top prizes were won by;-
1st Prize - Weekend break for two - Mrs Sykes of Holmfirth.
2nd Prize - Rotary Centenary Tea Service - Calverley Rotary Club.
3rd Prize - Case of wine - Employee of Cendant, Yeadon.
Many other prizes were won by people throughout the district.
Many thanks to all the people who bought tickets, this has made a significant donation to the Yorkshire School appeal.

CURRY WITH 'FINGERS' A GREAT SUCCESS




Nearly 200 Rotarians and Guests attended the Rotary District fundraing event last night at the Aakash Restaurant Cleakheaton. A really good time was had by all as we were treated to excellent and delicious curries. Colin Fingers Henry,international cabaret artiste and a Yorkshireman from Doncaster had everyone in stitches with his jokes and his piano playing was fantastic- even when standing on his head. The evening raised £2800 and particular thanks to HSBC who provided raffle prizes, sold tickets and then gave a donation of £500.

Racegoers See 'Yorkshire School' win the Big One

COME TO THE RACES organised by Rotary Club of Elland Cricket Club on Sunday 13th November and sponsored by Lloyds TSB, was attended by 100 people who enjoyed a splendid 3 course lunch and six races featuring horses owned, named and trained by Elland Rotarians and spouses with each race being sponsored by a local company or business.

The Tote was run by six students from Rishworth School and the Feature Race being an Auction saw “TheYorkshire School” winning an exciting and close run race. Overall the event raised a magnificent £1846-00. This was certainly a Winner!!

 

Golfers Come Up Par

Last night at the Charity Night of Rotary Club of Northallerton Mowbray the proceeds of their Annual Charity Golf Tournament held in June were distributed to 6 charities icluding £260 to the Yorkshire School Appeal. Congratulations to all who took part and thank you from all the charities who benefited.

Young Musicians Play for Sri Lanka School children


Rotary Club of Knaresborough organised the Annual Young Musicians of the Year event on Saturday 12th November. Young musicians from schools in Knaresborough, Boroughbridge and surrounding villages performed all day and held a combined concert in the evening proudly displaying their 'I'm a brick in Sri Lanka' stickers. They raised an amazing £3000 which is being donated to the school appeal.

Harvest Festival Donations

Several Schools across the County have donated funds collected at their Harvest Festival. It is really great that our school children are trying to help other children in another continent by providing them with a new school. Education is the best gift we can give to the children of Kaluwachikudy. The appeal total has now reached £127,000.

School Building Work Starts

Work has now started on the building of the Yorkshire School Sri Lanka with a ceremony on Saturday 5th November when the foundation stone was laid. The building should take 6 months and should be completed in June 2006. Photos will be published shortly
The first installment of £40,000 has been sent to Stantard Chartered Bank Colombo for the school trust account. We still need more financial support before Boxing Day when the appeal closes.
