School Construction Progress

In a recent e-mail from our International Partner in Sri Lanka Rotarian Mahen Amalean a member of the Cinnamon Gardens Club and co-ordinator for the project said - "The school construction is progressing well, but slow. Under prevailing circumstances we are happy that the work is progressing".
This is a reference to the fragile security situation in the East of the country.

We wish to thank Mahen for all his hard work and for keeping us up to date with progress.

Tsunami - Second Anniversary.

Today is the second anniversary of the worst ever natural disaster to hit South East Asia. The East coast of Sri Lanka was devastated by the massive tidal wave that occured two years ago today destroying property and lives.
In and around Batticaloa ten schools were destroyed, we are funding the rebuilding of one of these schools at Kaluwanchikudy this is to be known as the "Yorkshire School".
The school is almost eighty percent complete and should be finished within the next month or so.

Our partners Rotary in Sri Lanka are re-building twenty five schools that were destroyed or damaged by the Tsunami on the 26th December 2004 and they are doing a brilliant job - whilst millions of dollars are accumulating in aid agency accounts these agencies are struggling to achieve their goals. Rotary in Yorkshire has the advantage of working directly with Rotarians in Sri Lanka to get things done on the ground and our school is almost complete. All monies raised are forwarded direct to Standard Charter Bank in Colombo and paid into a designated account for our school. One hundred percent of all donations will be spent on the school buildings.

The Yorkshire School will give the people and in particular the children of Batticaloa hope in the future.

All our thoughts and prayers today are with the people of Sri Lanka.

Business Support for School

A local Business man from Skipton who pledged support some time ago for the School has donated a cheque for £250.00p to the appeal, a big thank you to Michael Cook for his support.

More School Support

Three hundred year eight pupils at South Craven School near Skipton are to donate additional funds to the Sri Lankan school by filling smarty tubes with money.
South Craven School donated £1,000.00p at the start of the appeal and promised their continued support for the project.
We were hoping that the school would be open by the end of December but due to the delays we are hoping the school will be completed by the end of January.

Musical Instruments

Rotary Club of Knaresborough is raising funds for the supply of instruments for the music department of the KSV. Initial funds are to be raised from their Young Musian of the Year Awards.

Schools Re-awaken Annual Report.

Rotary District 1040 have now received the Sri Lankan Schools Re-awaken Annual Report and Audited Accounts from the APEX Committe in Colombo. These will now be delivered to all Major supporting Clubs and also available at Rotary District Council on the 20th January 2007.

Peace Talks Fail

No progress was made at the recent Peace Talks in Geneva between the Sri Lankan Government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
Due to the lack of an agreement between the parties the security situation in the East of the country around Batticaloa and our school is extremely fragile, but no escalation has been reported to date, however this will delay the completion of the School.
