Tsunami - Second Anniversary.
Today is the second anniversary of the worst ever natural disaster to hit South East Asia. The East coast of Sri Lanka was devastated by the massive tidal wave that occured two years ago today destroying property and lives.
In and around Batticaloa ten schools were destroyed, we are funding the rebuilding of one of these schools at Kaluwanchikudy this is to be known as the "Yorkshire School".
The school is almost eighty percent complete and should be finished within the next month or so.
Our partners Rotary in Sri Lanka are re-building twenty five schools that were destroyed or damaged by the Tsunami on the 26th December 2004 and they are doing a brilliant job - whilst millions of dollars are accumulating in aid agency accounts these agencies are struggling to achieve their goals. Rotary in Yorkshire has the advantage of working directly with Rotarians in Sri Lanka to get things done on the ground and our school is almost complete. All monies raised are forwarded direct to Standard Charter Bank in Colombo and paid into a designated account for our school. One hundred percent of all donations will be spent on the school buildings.
The Yorkshire School will give the people and in particular the children of Batticaloa hope in the future.
All our thoughts and prayers today are with the people of Sri Lanka.
