Sri Lanka Team Returns

A group of 20 Rotarians and partners visited Sri Lanka between the 20th & 28th September to meet with local Rotarians and all those involved with the construction of the "Yorkshire School". We also had meetings with the APEX committee, Standard Charter Bank (bankers for the project) the Ministry of Education, the Deputy Headmaster and the teachers from the KSV school.

Unfortunately due to the fragile security situation it was not considered safe for the whole group to visit our school so only two attended. They reported back claiming the project to be a massive sucess. The two storey building being vertually complete and being finally fitted out, the two three storey buildings were having the top floors laid, toilet block and headmasters house having being completed some months ago. The school is now 70-75% complete with the projected finish date being the end of December 2006.

While in Sri Lanka the whole group visited Randombe School, this was the first school in the Re-awaken project to open. We were greeted by dancing children and we were all presented with garlands and spent a very emotional but rewarding four hours in their company during which time they fed us and entertained us with both music and dance, we were also invited into the classrooms and attended their Interact meeting.

This visit has helped to identify many areas of future support and also to understand the Local Education system.
